Your new Nokia N97 device offers you built-in A-GPS together with Nokia Maps to explore cities around the world. Whether you are in your hometown looking for the closest petrol station or in a foreign city searching for the best way to the airport, Nokia N97 will guide you there.
From this page you will find handy instructions on how to use the maps application, how to browse or download maps, or why to use A-GPS and digital compass.
To access the Maps application, select Menu > Maps. You can also access Maps easily from the home screen by tapping the Maps shortcut on the screen.
You can use applications such as Maps to find your location or measure distances and coordinates. These applications require a GPS connection. (Note that if GPS is not assisted, locating yourself will take a longer time.) Using Maps, it is also possible to search for specific places such as restaurants, sights, shops, and stations wherever you are.
Once you are in map mode (Menu > Maps > ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Go online now?’), the GPS indicator in the bottom-right corner shows the strength of the satellite signals. When the device tries to find satellite signals, the bar is yellow. When the device receives enough data from the satellites for GPS to calculate your location, the bar turns green. The more green bars, the more reliable the location calculation. Initially, your device must receive signals from at least four satellites to calculate the coordinates of your location. After the initial calculation, signals from three satellites may be enough.
Your device supports Assisted GPS (A-GPS), which is a network service. Assisted GPS is an enhanced version of GPS. It retrieves assistance data over a packet data connection, which assists in calculating the coordinates of your current location when your device is receiving signals from satellites.
When you activate A-GPS, your device receives useful satellite information from an assistance data server over the cellular network.
To activate or deactivate A-GPS:
In the same menu you can also choose other positioning methods:
To avoid data transfer costs, you can also use Maps without an Internet connection, and browse the maps that are saved in your device or memory card. When you use Maps for the first time, you may need to select an Internet access point for downloading maps. If you browse to an area which is not covered by maps already downloaded in your device, a map for the area is automatically downloaded through the internet.
You can use Nokia Ovi Suite to download maps data for free. You’ll find the software and instructions at http://nokia.com.ph/maps.
